Ghosts and Sparse Properties: Why Physicalists Have More to Fear from Ghosts than Zombies
نویسنده
چکیده
Zombies are bodies without minds: creatures that are physically identical to actual human beings, but which have no conscious experience. Much of the consciousness literature concerns how threatening philosophical reflection on such creatures is to physicalism. There is not much attention given to the converse possibility, the possibility of minds without bodies, that is, creatures who are conscious but whose nature is exhausted by their being conscious. We can call such a ‘purely conscious’ creature a ghost. In this paper, I will claim that philosophical reflection on zombies is not threatening to all forms of physicalism: specifically it causes no difficulties for the non-standard form of physicalism I like to call ‘funny physicalism’. I go on to claim that philosophical reflection on ghosts leads to powerful arguments against all forms of physicalism, including funny physicalism. In this sense, physicalists have more to fear from ghosts than from zombies.

Lecture 10 on Differential Equations & Differential Invariants and Lecture 11 on Differential Equations & Proofs equipped us with powerful tools for proving properties of differential equations without having to solve them. Differential invariants (dI) [Pla10a, Pla12] prove properties of differential equations by induction based on the right-hand side of the differential equation, rather than i...

1. Obelin, the Ca(2+)-activated luminescent protein from the hydroid Obelia geniculata, was sealed inside pigeon erythrocyte ;ghosts' in order to investigate effects on their permeability of different methods of preparation and of the bivalent cation ionophore A23187. 2. Changes in free Ca(2+) within the ;ghosts' were studied by following the rate of luminescence of obelin. The possibility that...

Two arguments are famously held to support the conclusion that consciousness cannot be explained in purely physical or functional terms – hence, that physicalism is false: the modal argument and the knowledge argument. While anti-physicalists appeal to both arguments, this paper argues there is a methodological incoherence in jointly maintaining them: the modal argument supports the possibility...
متن کاملThe Electrophoretic Velocity of Human Red Cells, of Their Ghosts and Mechanically Produced Fragments, and of Certain Lipid Complexes
Ghosts prepared in CO(2)-saturated water from unwashed human red cells can be fragmented mechanically, but ghosts from thrice washed cells cannot. If the ghosts are prepared by freezing and thawing, this difference is not observed. The electrophoretic velocity varies also with the way in which the ghosts are prepared. The pH-mobility dependence of washed red cells flatten off to a plateau at pH...
